대학(大學)은 본디 예기(禮記)의 한 편이던 것을 송나라 주희(朱熹)가 따로 떼어 장구(章句)를 붙이면서 논어·맹자·중용과 함께 사서(四書)가 된 책입니다. 옛 서당에서 천자문으로 글자를 익히고 소학으로 몸가짐을 배운 아이가, 비로소 학문의 차례를 세우려고 펼치는 첫 책이 이것이었습니다. 수신제가치국평천하, 명명덕, 지어지선, 격물치지, 일신우일신, 절차탁마, 심부재언 — 우리가 오늘도 쓰는 말들이 여기서 나왔습니다. 이 앱은 삼강령과 팔조목을 밝힌 경1장을 한 글자도 빼지 않고 싣고, 그것을 하나씩 풀어 낸 전(傳) 열 장을 모두 담아 54과 58구절로 구성했습니다.
Daehak — the Great Learning — began as a chapter of the Book of Rites. Zhu Xi set it apart in the Song and wrote his chapter-and-verse commentary, and it became the first of the Four Books: the book you open once you know your characters and want to know the order of study. Cultivate yourself, order your family, govern the state, bring peace to all under heaven — the sequence begins here. This app carries the whole of the classic text that states the three principles and the eight steps, together with all ten chapters of commentary, in 58 passages across 54 lessons.

The Great Learning lays out a sequence that runs from cultivating oneself to bringing peace to all under heaven, and it speaks in the language of its own society — ruler and minister, father and son — while the tenth chapter argues about the wealth of a state. Nothing is removed; the commentary says which age's words these were and what they can mean for a reader now.
