Mencius — argued out with kings, across all seven books
Mencius — Meng Ke, a century after Confucius — went from court to court asking kings how a state ought to be governed, and his disciples collected the exchanges. Where the Analects gathers short sayings, Mencius argues: a case pressed to its conclusion with an opponent in the room. That is why village schools in Korea opened this book once the Great Learning was finished — nothing teaches how classical Chinese builds an argument as well. This app carries passages from all seven books, from King Hui of Liang to Exhausting the Mind — 101 passages across 59 lessons.

Mencius argues with kings, and it speaks in the language of its own society — ruler and minister, scholar and commoner. Some arguments read strangely now, such as the reply that one had heard of a mere fellow being executed, not of a ruler being killed. Nothing is removed; the commentary says which age's words these were and what they can mean for a reader today.
