소학(小學)은 주자가 제자 유청지와 함께 엮은 어린이 수신 교과서입니다. 물 뿌리고 쓸고 어른께 응대하는 법에서 시작해 몸가짐과 인륜의 바탕을 세우는 책이지요. 조선의 서당에서는 이 책을 다 뗀 뒤에야 사서(四書)의 큰 공부로 넘어갔습니다. 신체발부 수지부모도, 남녀칠세부동석도, 맹모삼천과 단기지교도 모두 여기서 나온 말입니다. 이 앱은 주자의 제사(題辭)로 시작해 내편 네 편(입교·명륜·경신·계고)과 외편 두 편(가언·선행)까지 원전을 한 장도 빼지 않고 담았습니다. 382과 752구절, 원문 28,640자입니다.
Sohak — the "Lesser Learning" — is the primer Zhu Xi compiled with his student Liu Qingzhi for children, beginning with how to sweep a floor and answer an elder and building from there toward the whole of human conduct. In Korea it was the book you had to finish before the Four Books were opened to you. This app carries the complete text — Zhu Xi's preface, the four inner chapters and the two outer ones — as 382 lessons and 752 passages.

소학은 조선의 어린이 교본입니다. 명륜편의 남녀칠세부동석이나 안팎을 나눈 거처처럼 오늘의 눈으로 보면 시대의 한계가 뚜렷한 대목이 원문에 있습니다. 지우지 않고 그대로 싣되, 새김에 그것이 어느 시대의 규범이었는지 밝히고 무엇이 지금도 읽을 만한지 함께 적어 두었습니다. 고전은 있는 그대로 읽히되, 오독되지 않아야 한다고 보았습니다.
This is a primer written for another age. Some passages — the separation of boys and girls at seven, the divided inner and outer quarters — carry the limits of their time. Rather than removing them, the app presents them as they are and says in the commentary which age's rule this was, marking what still reads well and what belongs to the past.
