어떤 책인가About the text

The Doctrine of the Mean began as a single chapter of the Book of Rites. Tradition credits it to Zisi, grandson of Confucius. Zhu Xi lifted it out, paired it with the Great Learning, the Analects and Mencius to form the Four Books, and divided it into thirty-three chapters. In the old village schools it was the last of the four to be read.

"What heaven confers is called the nature; following the nature is called the way; cultivating the way is called teaching." From those three lines it moves through watchfulness when alone and timeliness, and gathers, chapter by chapter, into a single word: sincerity.

This app skips none of the thirty-three chapters: each is represented by its decisive passage — 101 passages across 66 lessons, 1,686 characters.

The text is short but cumulative: it opens with nature, way and teaching, returns to the same words in new positions to thicken their meaning, and closes with "neither sound nor scent." Every passage therefore carries Korean reading particles, a word-by-word gloss, a translation, and a note placing it in its chapter. The original follows the received edition; the particles, glosses and commentary were written for this app.

가운데를 취하라는 책이 아닙니다Not a book about splitting the difference

The "mean" here is not a midpoint between two positions. It is the place with neither excess nor deficiency — and that place moves. Chapter 2 names it timeliness: the noble person's mean is to meet each moment as it comes. It is less "be moderate" than "measure again."

As the text goes on it turns away from practical tact and gathers into one word, sincerity: "Sincerity is the way of heaven; to become sincere is the way of man." The commentary places each passage within that movement.
